Two-Way vs Four-Way Pallets: Which One Should You Buy?

A two-way pallet accepts forklift entry on two opposite sides. A four-way pallet accepts entry on all four. The choice affects handling speed, load-bearing behaviour and cost — and it is one of the first questions we ask when quoting a new specification.

The physical difference

A two-way pallet uses continuous stringers running the length of the pallet, so the forklift can only enter from the two open ends. Because the stringers are continuous, the pallet is stiff along its length — it resists sag under heavy static loads better than a comparable four-way build.

A four-way pallet notches the stringers (or replaces them with blocks) so the forklift can enter from any side. The notches or block arrangement reduce longitudinal stiffness slightly, but the pallet is far more flexible to handle — especially in tight warehouses where the pallet cannot always be approached from the "correct" side.

When to choose two-way

  • Heavy static loads. Machinery, dense drums, castings — continuous stringers carry the weight without deflection.
  • Cost-sensitive orders. Two-way is typically cheaper per unit because the framing is simpler.
  • Predictable handling. Warehouses and factories where the pallet always approaches the forklift from the same axis.
  • When to choose four-way

  • High-turnover warehousing. Handling speed matters more than cost per pallet — the forklift picks up from whichever side is nearest.
  • Racking. Racking usually requires entry from a specific side; four-way makes it easier for the operator to load without repositioning.
  • Export container loading. Loading a 20ft or 40ft container is faster when the pallet can be nudged from either axis.
  • Common mistakes

  • Choosing two-way to save money on a racking application. The saving evaporates when the operator has to reorient every pallet.
  • Choosing four-way for very heavy static loads without reinforcing the stringers. The notches reduce stiffness — CeyPall compensates with thicker stringers or block framing.
  • Ignoring the destination warehouse. If your customer's warehouse only handles four-way, sending two-way pallets will trigger a rejection.
  • What CeyPall recommends

For most Sri Lankan exporters, four-way entry is the safer default — it works in more warehouses, loads faster into containers, and is preferred by most destination customers. Choose two-way when the load is heavy and static, when the pallet stays in a controlled environment, or when unit cost is decisive.
